We found this special pub/small hotel via a newspaper review. It really lived up to the review I had read. Lovely spacious room with great shower and roll top bath. Relaxing furnishings. Excellent evening meal - soufflé was first class as was rest of meal and good choice of wine. Breakfast again very good served by lovely staff. Definite tick for a return visit. LoPont July 2017.
A delightful three days, including meals, at this exceptionally well-managed facility in the lower end of the Lake District. You get personal care and specific interest in customers only by getting the right values, habits and inclinations installed and preserved. There's a moving force guiding this business and it was impressive from start to finish. One correction: Someone referred to this inn's fare as "pub grub." That's just flat wrong. It is substantially better than that. This is a fully-staffed, intelligent kitchen kicking out creative meals. We didn't eat three dinners there for lack of an alternative. Would return in a heartbeat. Liked this place -- and its people -- a lot. Caperton GC. July 2017
"Excellent all round". From the moment we entered the place and were greeted by a cheerful, charming lady we knew this was a fine choice. The only problem with the menu is I fancied everything on it! When the food arrived it was excellent, and not one of us could find fault in any of it.
"Do yourself a favour and visit, we will undoubtedly return". June 2017.
"Beautiful location, impeccable decor, and welcoming staff". June 2017.
"Splendid Sunday". Met with old friends for a small birthday celebration. Staff attentive, pleasant and professional. Thoroughly enjoyed a three-course Sunday lunch with a stand-out roast beef for main plus a delightful chocolate tart. Good value for an excellent meal. June 2017. whatJDC69
There are insufficient superlatives to describe this place ! We stayed for two nights (the first two of our trip to The Outer Hebrides) and The Punchbowl set an impossibly high bar which none of the other (six) hotels we stayed in could possibly match. Michael G. May 2017.
Whats not to like! A group of 10 - we stayed for 1 night and had dinner in the restaurant. The rooms are generous with great ensuite bathrooms. Lovely linens and toiletries. The staff are very helpful and pleasant. The free cream tea on arrival was a lovely touch. Our meal was fabulous and a reasonable price too. As we were a large party we were sat in private dining area with its own lounge area which meant we didn't have to worry about disturbing other guests. Sharon B. May 2017.
Excellent food destination pub in beautiful surroundings. The Punch Bowl Inn lived up to our expectations and reviews on Trip Advisor are spot on, if you like excellent food in beautiful idyllic surroundings then this is the place to visit. We will certainly return in the future. DLMinsip. May 2017
We have just returned from the first, of what shall hopefully become many, visits to The Punch Bowl. The service was outstanding from the second we entered the door. Every single member of staff were so genuinely friendly, approachable, attentive and delightful. Shaunb March 2017
We have been visiting The Punch Bowl for a number of years, indeed every time we were in the area. We just think the food, and pleasant elegant, but laid back, atmosphere are terrific. pmydon March 2017
We are very fortunate, because we live near this wonderful restaurant and can therefore dine quite often. In our opinion, this is the best restaurant in the South Lakes - and we have visited many, including some with a Michelin star. The meals are expertly created by the team in the kitchen and brought to the table by friendly and attentive staff. In addition to an extensive wine list, the bar serves well-kept real ales. A truly exceptional destination for dining. Roger. DG March 2017.
"Best place in the Lakes". Just a superb place to stay in the Lake District. How a 21 year-old head chef can be this good beggars belief. Mind you, they do use the best local ingredients. His starter of scallops, chicken and carrots in a complementary sauce was arguably the best starter I've ever had anywhere. Alan E. February 2017.
"Lovely food & atmosphere". We popped in for a little lunch on Saturday The place is very welcoming, fairly relaxed and with friendly staff. We ate in the bar area with lovely fire and sofa papers & magazines the food was very good a nice treat. Restaurantcritic41 February 2017.
"Very enjoyable lunch". We went today 9/02/2015 for lunch. I had the crab risotto which was to die for. And my Husband surprised me by going for the beetroot risotto which surprised me!!!! But we both agreed both risottos were excellent. Service was exceptional and extremely friendly. Nice log fire burning and we appreciated that as it was a very cold day. We had a very, very enjoyable lunch and we will certainly be returning. Thank you. We really enjoyed our lunch. MrsDGB February 2017
"Wonderfully welcoming. 9 of us here for my Dad's 90th birthday lunch. Such a welcoming place, everyone was so friendly which made the occasion even better. The food was wonderful (my Dad as an ex-butcher normally finds the meat anywhere we go not quite up to scratch, but was happy for once!). Great unhurried 3 hour lunch, and my little lad loved slonking on the leather sofa by the fire when the adult talk bored him. We'll be back soon. John T January 2017.
"Relaxed Sunday lunch". Delicious food in lovely surroundings. Staff friendly too. One of our party has difficulty walking but we were able to drop off right outside the door. From memory there are a few internal steps which may trouble some, but my Dad managed them OK. Bit of a way from anywhere but well worth the drive. Fellgirl January 2017.
"Exceeded expectations". Visited for a birthday treat. All the food was delicious . The menu is relatively expensive but good value for money for the quality of food. The staff appear very passionate about their work especially the general manager who was a delight. We look forward to our next visit. CDC January 2017.
"Standards of hospitality and cooking continue". We are local to this eatery and haven't been for 12 months, the Lyth Valley has many great places to nosh and feed. The Punch Bowl does not disappoint. The black pudding and scotch egg, still being cooked perfectly, thank goodness still available. Just as good as I remember. The Pork was superb, equal in flavour and quality to Forest Side Grasmere with its Michelin One Star. When pork is cooked to these standards then I can't resist it. I would happily put both meals side by side, preferring the portion and combination at the Punch Bowl. Abracadabra December 2016.
"1st class". Stayed for a night before the Xmas madness. Cannot fault, this is the 3rd time we've stayed and it never disappoints. Fabulous food and the friendliest staff I've ever come across. There will definitely be a 4th time. F. December 2016.
"Best Christmas ever". As we were going to enjoy our first Christmas without the ties of ancient mother or other family we booked the two night Christmas package at The Punch Bowl. We had some slight trepidation on our way from Anglesey as we knew nothing about The Punch Bowl apart from the fact that it had been recommended on line. All our concerns melted away from the moment we walked in. What a wonderful, welcoming and homely place! From the welcoming, happy, efficient staff to the beautifully decorated public rooms and the fantastic bedroom - we couldn't fault a thing. The food was outstanding throughout our stay, with quiet and unobtrusive service. We were serenaded with carol singers on Christmas Eve and entertained by some brilliant hand bell ringers on Christmas Day. We met some lovely people also staying for the Christmas break and Lorraine very kindly rearranged our table so that we could sit with them for Christmas lunch.
Thank you Richard and to all the staff at The Punch Bowl for making Christmas 2016 memorable. We are telling all our friends about the Punch Bowl so you may get a Welsh invasion from Anglesey soon! CT December 2016
Returned for a mid-week walking and relaxation escape and appreciated the warm welcome and service from the whole team. Food and accommodation top notch with afternoon tea being a lovely addition to a wonderful break. Y14 November 2016
Superb! A return visit for me but a first for the three friends who accompanied me. We were all equally impressed with the very warm welcome we received from all of the staff upon our arrival. The food was outstanding as usual, great variety and quality. LW November 2016
As lovely as our last visit. It's been a few years since we last stayed and we weren't disappointed. Welcomed with cream tea, with freshly made scones. Our room was lovely and great evening meal. Popular with all rooms taken on a Monday night. Very nice to return. SB November 2016
This is our favourite location in the Lakes. The service is excellent the food special and they staff are so welcoming and efficient. We have ben twice before and it has been equally as good each time. It is also dog friendly. Highly recommended. Mike M November 2016
We absolutely loved our three night stay at the Punch Bowl. The rooms are modern and spacious with extremely comfortable beds and excellent bathrooms. The food is first class and all of the staff went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. R65 October 2016
One of the best meals I have had, exceptional. JM October 2016
Lovely stay! We enjoyed an excellent 2 night stay at the Punch Bowl Inn. We stayed in Birkett which has lovely views. FJ September 2016
Fantastic food. We had the most amazing meal with friends in the dining area of the bar, rather than the dining room, accompanied by our rather large well behaved dog. The service was excellent, really efficient and quick without feeling hurried. We all really enjoyed the food, which was truly amazing both in taste and presentation. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and had been out all day in the warm sunshine, our meal was a fantastic end to a very enjoyable day. The accolade of Cumbrian dining pub 2016 is well deserved. S&JB September
A simple review. I won't witter on today!! Simple one night visit. Nice room, lovely bathroom, food pretty good, VERY lucky with the weather. But, most important is the service we received!! Big thanks, you definitely made the night. A credit to the place. Thanks all. BMNH September.
