Most enjoyable stay, characterful country inn with fine dining. Staff friendly knowledgeable & helpful. Rooms well appointed with wonderful views.
Dinner was sublime fresh ingredients cooked with skill. The fillet steak with ox cheek & the sea bass deserving of a special mention as is the raspberry soufflé.
Excellent - gets better!
Visited The Punchbowl and once again the food was excellent. The staff are superb, nothing is too much trouble. There have been changes to the menu but what super choices. This is our favourite place to dine in the Lake District. Phillbrook
The most beautiful soufflé(s) in the world.
We visited on Easter Sunday and were blown away by the amazing service and incredible food. We were seated in a lovely room with a roaring fire and large leather sofa in the centre which was fantastic for when our baby daughter fancied a roam around. She was welcomed really warmly by all the wait staff which is always a lovely positive thing for us. The drive up to the Punch Bowl is stunning and once you're inside it just gets better. We had the most wonderful meal. The cheese soufflé really kicked things off nicely, followed by a beautiful nut-crusted chicken and then the banana soufflé (I know, I know, quite a lot of eggs were consumed...) which was the best dessert I think I've ever had. Absolutely magic. There were lovely little touches such as handmade butter pats along with the bread and chilli spiked olives and beautiful complimentary truffles with coffee. The atmosphere is warm yet relaxed and the wine list is outstanding. We loved it!
Excellence as Standard.
We have visited the Punchbowl many times and had the luxury of staying over for a couple of nights in the Noble Room, which is a very spacious suite, with 2 baths! Everything about the Punchbowl oozes genuine charm and hospitality. The staff are fantastic, the food delicious, the accommodation elegant and the overall atmosphere, Amazing. This place is not cheap....but soooooo worth it! Enjoy.
Sunday walk and lunch. A lovely 3 hour walk, finished with a great Sunday lunch. The gravy with the roast was amazing. In fact all the meals were great. Beef was very rare, but to my taste. The twice cooked soufflé starters were beyond amazing.
Fantastic food and first class service !
Took my wife for a 2 day break for her birthday having only passed through for coffee previously whilst in the Lakes and had a wonderful time from start to finish. The service from all the staff was very attentive but not imposing and you could see they worked extremely well as a team whilst the food was absolutely wonderful so no wonder they win so many awards! Excellent food and service.
We had vouchers as a Christmas present, we have been before over the years, but last night was great. The food was excellent, we couldn't fault it and the service was impeccable. I would thoroughly recommend the Punchbowl.
An absolute must!
What a lovely place. We went to meet up with friends for an evening meal with our 2 boys (15 & 16). The food was just fantastic. Newie.
Loved our experience at Punchbowl.
Great food and wonderful warmth on a cold winter's day! Well worth the drive (and flight from Australia)! Such a great example of the English pub. We were lucky to grab a walk-in booking but would thoroughly recommend making the booking if you know you are in the area. Janet Y.
Perfect in every way.
Took my wife here for a treat we stayed for 1 night ,the scone for Afternoon tea was amazing? Mine was gluten free, the best gluten free scone I have ever had. We stayed in Noble suit.Wow,Wow,Wow.
We return to the Punch Bowl time after time and do you know what ? It gets better and better. The dishes are always full of flavour and the produce used is excellent.
I had a tomato and fig salad to start and it was delicious. My wife had the souffle and then chicken escalope. My main of cod with capers, pine nuts and almonds was superb. Back again soon !! John A
Incredibly accommodating & really friendly staff.
The food was exceptional & the atmosphere smart but relaxed. Highly recommend the cheese soufflé & blackberry soufflé. The steak wasn't bad either 😁 well worth a visit!
This was a really lovely place to stay. We had two nights there on a round trip of 1000 miles and it was definitely the best place we stayed at. This was an Alistair Sawday recommendation from one of his guides borrowed from the library. You start off with a cream tea on arrival (before 5.30 pm ) . All the rooms are named, not numbered, about eight of them I think. Everywhere decorated in Farrow and Ball colors, so very calming all round. Dining room is about three rooms serving a lot of locals who are there for the food and convivial atmosphere which sets the tone of the whole place. It is so rural that reception just inside the entrance door also serves as the local Post Office. Beautiful setting next to village church;ample car parking. Interesting long slate covered bar in between two of the dining rooms. There is no fiddling about with a kettle and filling it in the bathroom to make a cup of tea - instead, at any time you want it you phone Reception and a tray of tea or coffee is delivered to where you are. Friendly, helpful staff all the time. Richard
Best in Cumbria.
Another return visit to The Punchbowl and possibly the best meal yet. Had the Pork Tenderloin & Shoulder, Confit Cabbage, Apple and Mustard Jus main which was just perfect. Delicious flavour and crispy sage leaves fantastic. For pud I chose the Salted Caramel, Ginger, Pear, Milk Ice Cream and Honeycomb. It was superb and such a lovely combination of flavours. Staff always helpful and service unobtrusive and efficient. 10 out of 10 from me! A very happy diner.
Worth The Journey
First time visited on way back up country from Manchester and enjoyed the meal so this week we traveled down for a evening meal with friends.
The menu is well presented and truefully provided plenty of choice.
You could quite easily have three or four of the choices on offer.
Main course selection is just as good and all was very enjoyable. Phil B
We found this special pub/small hotel via a newspaper review. It really lived up to the review I had read. Lovely spacious room with great shower and roll top bath. Relaxing furnishings. Excellent evening meal - soufflé was first class as was rest of meal and good choice of wine. Breakfast again very good served by lovely staff. Definite tick for a return visit.
Visited the Punch Bowl on the recommendation of friends for our anniversary. This has to be the loveliest Inn and Restaurant in the whole of Cumbria everything about the Punch Bowl is to the highest standard. - the service from each the staff is beyond excellent and compares with that we have had in international hotels, food is fine dining with the meals presented in a original style making use of local suppliers for ingredients - choice of wines is comprehensive and compliment the menu - a must try is the cheese soufflé and the lemon tart .. they have to be the best ever tasted! Rooms are spacious, decorated to very high standard and visited daily by the excellent housekeeping staff. Location and views are breath-taking, the Inn is within easy travelling distance from Kendal, Windermere and Ambleside and has the added advantage of being central for some great walking trails. We will be visiting again in December for our friends wedding, but the Punch Bowl may draw us back before them - it was a truly great week. John
