Welcome

Often described as a ‘home from home’, but with a touch more luxury, you’ll feel truly relaxed here, whether sitting in front of a roaring fire, watching the sunset from our pretty terrace, or tucking in to a delicious meal.

History

Originating in the Seventeenth Century, The Punch Bowl is a real character inn.  When the current owner, born and bred Lakelander, Richard Rose renovated the then dilapidated building in 2005, he restored all the original features, including the ancient oak beams, traditional fireplaces and Westmorland flagged floors.  In the years to come Richard and his team created what became ‘Cumbria’s Original Gastro Pub’ with national recognition.

Location

Set in the sleepy village of Crosthwaite, The Punch Bowl has plenty of picturesque walks on its doorstep and stunning views down the Lyth Valley.  This region, famous for its damsons, has made ‘The Lonely Planet Beautiful World List’, described as “tucked in a hidden corner of Cumbria, where trees are laden with fruit and rolling hills are the most magnificent green”.  The Punch Bowl also happens to be only fifteen minutes’ drive from the tourist hot spots of Bowness and Lake Windermere.

Activities

‘Must do’ walks include Gummer’s Howe and Scout’s Scar for amazing views, High Dam for its wild swimming tarn and The Fairfield Horseshoe, probably the best Wainright.  For even sportier types, there’s Fellfoot Watersports, Grizedale Forest Mountain Biking and Windermere Golf Club.  For those with a more relaxed attitude, there’s Blackwell Arts & Crafts House, Windermere Jetty Museum and Sizergh Castle & Gardens.  Finally, for stunning journeys, try Haverthwaite steam train combined with a lake cruise or the A591 drive to Keswick, voted England’s most scenic road.

Team

We’re very proud of all our team because everyone is so warm and genuine.  This is backed up by our excellent reviews on Facebook and Tripadvisor as well as the fact we recently won The Top 50 Gastro Pub’s ‘Front of House Team of The Year’.  The friendly atmosphere at the Punch Bowl might be explained by the fact almost half the team have been here for over ten years!  We also like to attract new talent, so if you're interested in joining us please email your CV to info@the-punchbowl.co.uk.
